The Texas Rangers are an American professional baseball team based in Arlington, Texas, located in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The Rangers franchise currently competes in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the American League (AL) West division. Since 1994, the Rangers have played in Globe Life Park in Arlington. The team's name is borrowed from the famous law enforcement agency of the same name. The team was established as the Washington Senators, an expansion team that began play in 1961. After moving to Arlington, Texas for the 1972 season and changing their name to “Rangers”, they became competitive for much of the decade by consistently finishing second in the AL West standings. In 2010, they qualified for their first postseason appearance since 1999 by winning 90 games and placing second overall to win their first AL West division title since 1999 and finishing with a record above .500 for only third time since 1993 but were defeated by two-time defending AL champion New York Yankees 3-2 in American League Championship Series (ALCS). They repeated as AL West champions two years later before losing to Baltimore Orioles in five games after holding a 2-0 lead at home during 2012 American League Division Series (ALDS). In 2016, Forbes valued the Rangers at $1.65 billion, making them one of MLB's most valuable franchises according to Forbes' estimates
As a member of the American League (AL) West division, the Rangers compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. In 2020, they will move to the new Globe Life Field after having played at Globe Life Park in Arlington from 1994 to 2019. The team's name is borrowed from the famous law enforcement agency of the same name. The franchise was established in 1961 as the Washington Senators, an expansion team awarded to Washington, D.C., after the city's first AL ballclub (the second Washington Senators) moved to Minnesota and became the Twins (the original Washington Senators played primarily in the National League during that league's existence). After three seasons in Washington, D.C., the team relocated to Arlington, Texas, for the 1972 season and changed its name to “Rangers”. The team was unsuccessful at first; then having six winning seasons until achieving their first winning record and division championship in 1996. After this success, combined with other teams' relocations to make divisions smaller and more competitive balance-wise, Major League Baseball realigned into three divisions per league and added a third round consisting of best-of-five series before awarding a pennant and advancing into another best-of-seven series for each league: namely its current form beginning with this season (postseason format). In its existence, the franchise has won seven division titles. We’ve also made nine playoff appearances and have played in five World Series. In 2010, we went all the way to the World Series finals but lost to the San Francisco Giants. We went back again in 2011, this time winning our first title. Altogether, we have had more than 80 All-Star Game appearances by Rangers players! Ready more fun? Be sure to check out Cedar Ridge Preserve Dallas Texas
You'll notice that the team's name is shared with the law enforcement agency of the same name. This is no accident. The Texas Rangers were created in 1835 and are widely considered to be one of, if not the oldest law enforcement agency in North America. Not only did they hold this honor, but they were also the first law enforcement agency in the United States with statewide jurisdiction! Notably, both organizations share a history of being partially made up of Native American warriors (the team's mascot, for example). Let's just hope that it doesn't take 150 more years for either organization to win another championship.
Nolan Ryan, a pitcher who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 and is the only Ranger enshrined thus far, played for Texas from 1989-'93. He holds several major league career records, including most strikeouts (5,714), no-hitters (seven) and one-hitters (12). Are you traveling with a large group? In 1972, the Washington Senators moved to Arlington and became the Rangers. The team name is taken from the famous Texas Ranger law enforcement agency. There are many superstitions about why the team has never been successful. One of these superstitions is that the construction of The Ballpark in Arlington was built on an ancient Indian burial ground, which angered some spiritual leaders who cursed it for a lifetime of failure. The Hall of Fame players for this American baseball league include Nolan Ryan who played for 27 seasons, inducted in 1999 and Ivan Rodriguez who played for 21 seasons, inducted in 2017. The Boston Red Sox have had a long history with the Rangers as they traded away 10 players like Mark Teixeira after they defeated them to win their first World Series title since 1918
