All About John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza Dallas Texas

In the span of less than a week, President Kennedy delivered two major speeches that changed the face of Texas politics. In February 1963, he gave his notable “Peace Speech” at American University in Washington DC. On November 22, 1963, he was cut down by an assassin's bullet in Dallas. In the days following his death, many cities scrambled to select and erect monuments suitable for honoring the fallen president. The city of Dallas wanted to honor the memory of President John F Kennedy by creating a memorial that would be reflective of what JFK stood for: Peace and equality. As a result, it chose to make its Memorial Plaza reflect those themes as well as its own dedication to progress and innovation. Dallas-City-Buildings

The John F Kennedy Memorial Plaza was dedicated on June 24, 1970.

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza was dedicated on June 24, 1970, the seventh anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. The plaza was dedicated by his widow, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, along with Vice President Spiro Agnew and Lady Bird Johnson, the widow of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The dedication was a formal ceremony in large part because Lady Bird wanted to place a large wreath at the site rather than just use a small gold plaque as originally planned. At the time of its dedication, Mrs. Onassis said that the memorial would serve “as an inspiration to people around the world who seek freedom and justice” and that it would encourage “all those who are fighting for human rights and human dignity throughout the world.” Are you traveling with a large group? This monument is fifty feet tall and ten feet wide. It is located east of downtown Dallas at Main Street, Commerce Street, Record Street and Market Center Boulevard. This area encompasses blocks four through eight as outlined on the survey map of Dallas prepared by John Neely Bryan in 1839-1840. An interesting fact about the plaza is that it is made completely of concrete.

There is a lot that is interesting about the JFK Memorial Plaza. One of those facts is that it's made out of concrete. While you may know what concrete is, did you know the details? If not, let me tell you more. Concrete is a man-made building material that has three ingredients: cement, sand and water. Cement, sand and water are mixed together to form a tough paste. That tough paste is then spread over rebar to create a strong slab of concrete. Concrete does require some time to cure before it can be used as a building material because it takes some time for the cement to get hard again once it gets wet from the water in the mixture. However, once the curing process is done, then you have one of the hardest materials known to man! Concrete slabs can last for thousands of years with minimal maintenance needed throughout their lifespan. Concrete also comes in various colors and styles to make them look like other materials such as wood or stone if preferred by an architect or home builder. All these factors make concrete very popular in many industries today. Dallas-Skyline
