Dealey Plaza Dallas Texas

Dealey Plaza is a Dallas park that is known globally in connection with the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The plaza is named for George Bannerman Dealey, a leader of the Dallas Morning News and early supporter of JFK. Dealey Plaza is a park located in the West End Historic District of downtown Dallas, Texas (U.S.). It is sometimes called “the birthplace of Dallas”. Three streets converge at Dealey Plaza: Main Street, Commerce Street, and Elm Street. The plaza was initially constructed as part of a series of public works projects initiated under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program in the 1930s. The open space now occupied by Dealey Plaza was originally platted in 1841 as part of a 40-acre (16 ha) tract adjoining the landmark HJ. Exall House, also known as the “Old Red Brick”, built in 1868 and later donated to the Dallas Heritage Village. In November 1910, George Bannerman Dealey persuaded fellow members of the elevator manufacturers' trade association to use their influence in Washington to make it possible for the federal government to buy land on which to build post offices and courthouses. The project was formally dedicated by Mayor R. L. Thornton on November 22, 1940. Today it is owned and operated by the Dallas Parks Department with cooperation from the Dallas County Historical Society. Dallas-Streets There are no road signs that mark Dealey Plaza because it lies within an area where such signage does not conform with city ordinance. Dealey Plaza has been called “the most famous street in America,” by some sources. The president's motorcade route through Dealey Plaza was planned months in advance by US Secret Service agents. When you're in Dealey Plaza, walk the motorcade route by foot and feel the very street that President Kennedy's motorcade drove down. You'll be walking 100 feet from where the 35th President of the United States was assassinated. As you walk, take notice of the Texas School Book Depository building and look up at the window from which Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK. It is one of three locations on the 6th floor of this seven story building where a shooter may have been located; however, it is generally agreed upon that Oswald was located in this particular window. Dealey Plaza is also home to two other historic buildings: The Dallas County Administration Building and The Old Red Courthouse Museum as well as one monument – Klyde Warren Park.
