Team History

The franchise was founded in 1998 as the Detroit Shock. The team won the WNBA championship in 2003, 2006 and 2008. The “Big Three” of Deanna Nolan, Swin Cash and Ruth Riley led the Shock to their first WNBA title in 2003, with Nolan being named Finals MVP. In 2006, Detroit won its second championship behind a balanced roster that saw Cheryl Ford win Finals MVP. After winning its third title in 2008 behind Bill Laimbeer’s leadership and Katie Smith’s hot shooting, the Shock disbanded after the 2009 season. The franchise moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2010 and was renamed the Tulsa Shock. Despite having marquee players like Skylar Diggins-Smith and Glory Johnson on its roster during its time in Tulsa, the Shock finished with a losing record every season from 2011-2015. In 2016, the franchise was purchased by Dallas Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban and relocated to Arlington, Texas before officially being renamed the Dallas Wings.

The team is owned by Mark Cuban, who announced on March 25, 2016 that he would acquire the rights to a WNBA expansion franchise in Dallas. The team was originally based in Detroit, Michigan and known as the Detroit Shock. In 2003, the team won its first WNBA championship led by coach Bill Laimbeer and star players Deanna Nolan, Ruth Riley and Swin Cash. The Shock also made five straight playoff appearances from 2006 to 2010 before they were sold to Tulsa Pro Hoops LLC on July 20, 2010 after three seasons of ownership under William Davidson's Palace Sports & Entertainment group since their move from Detroit. After two seasons in Tulsa with minimal success (only winning 9 total games), the Shock moved to Dallas prior to the start of training camp for the 2016 season The team was founded in 1998 as the Detroit Shock, before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2010 and being renamed the Tulsa Shock. The Shock played their first season in Tulsa in 2010. The team's management announced on November 2, 2015 that the franchise would move to Arlington, Texas for the 2016 season and would be renamed the Dallas Wings. On March 18, 2016 the name and logo were unveiled at a pep rally with players Skylar Diggins and Glory Johnson in attendance.
